What is a Mei Tai?

A Mei Tai (pronounced "may tie"), is a traditional, Asian-style baby carrier. A mei tai is most easily recognized by the following characteristics: a square or rectangular-shaped piece of fabric (the body), with straps sewn to each of the four corners. One set of straps is tied around your waist, the other set to go over your shoulders backpack-style to tie your baby close to your body. How do I put on a BabyHawk Mei Tai?

• Tie the carrier apron-style around your waist with the pattern you wish to display facing your body.
• Seat a young baby "froggy-style", with legs crossed, tummy to tummy, in the body of the BabyHawk.
• Put one strap over each shoulder and either cross it in back, or bring them around to your front for a "backpack-style" strap.
• Tie the straps behind the back of a younger baby for more support and under the bottom of a larger baby or toddler.
• ALWAYS check your baby's position, especially when baby is on your back by glancing in a mirror, or a car or shop window. Be sure baby's bum is sitting lower than his/her knees and that everything is in order.
• Use a square knot instead of a bow when tying for security.
• In the back carry position you can tie the waist straps above or just under your breasts to get the baby higher on your body.
• It is safe for babies/toddlers to have their arms out over the top if that is what they prefer.
